How to Protect Yourself While the Industry Improves

  • Buy whole produce when possible: Pre-shredded lettuce and other pre-cut produce have more surface area exposed to handling and contamination. Whole heads of lettuce allow you to discard the outer two to three leaves, which have the most contact with soil and surfaces.
  • Rinse thoroughly under running water: Even produce labeled "prewashed" should be rinsed again at home. A 2021 study published through the National Institutes of Health found that rinsing with water and applying friction can help reduce cyclospora contamination on smooth-surfaced produce.
  • Use a clean produce brush for firm items: Scrub melons, cucumbers, and other firm produce with a clean brush, and cut away any bruised or damaged areas before eating.
  • Cook leafy greens when possible: Cyclospora is killed by adequate cooking temperatures reaching at least 158 degrees Fahrenheit. While most people prefer lettuce raw, cooking it in soups, sautés, or wilted salads provides an additional layer of protection.
  • Avoid commercial produce washes and bleach: The CDC and Georgia Department of Public Health recommend plain running water only; soap, bleach, and commercial produce washes are not recommended.

Wash your hands with soap and water before and after handling fresh produce to prevent cross-contamination in your kitchen.

However, the science and technology being deployed today suggest that future outbreaks could be prevented before they sicken thousands.
