Why Beauty Influencers Are Driving Teens to Use 40% More Fragrance and Personal Care Products

Teens who follow beauty influencers and watch makeup tutorials are using significantly more personal care products laden with hormone-disrupting chemicals, according to new research from Rutgers University. A peer-reviewed study published in August 2026 in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology is the first to directly link social media beauty engagement to higher personal care product use during adolescence, a biologically sensitive window when these chemicals pose their greatest risk to developing bodies.

What Did the Rutgers Study Find?

Researchers surveyed 143 students at Princeton High School in New Jersey about their personal care product use and social media habits. After controlling for gender, grade, race, ethnicity, and parental education, they discovered a striking pattern: teens who followed social media influencers with their own product lines used 30% more personal care products in the previous 24 hours than students who did not follow such accounts. Students who watched hair or beauty tutorials fared even worse, with product use 40% higher than non-watchers.

These percentages represent far more than aesthetic statistics. Personal care products are among the largest everyday sources of exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), compounds that interfere with hormonal systems at concentrations measured in parts per billion. A 30 to 40% increase in product count translates directly to a higher body burden of phthalates and parabens during the years when teenagers' hormonal, neurological, and reproductive systems are still developing.

"Social media turned out to be the most interesting part of our results. We often hear that social media may hurt kids' mental health and socioemotional development. This study suggests another cause for concern: social media's potential to increase the use of personal care products that often include hormone-disrupting and potentially carcinogenic chemicals," said Emily Barrett, the George G. How Do Fragrance Chemicals Harm Developing Teenagers?

Endocrine disruptors work differently from conventional poisons. Rather than causing harm in proportion to dose, they operate like counterfeit hormone signals, interfering with hormone synthesis, secretion, transport, binding, action, or elimination at concentrations as low as parts per billion. The two classes most pervasive in personal care products are phthalates and parabens.

Phthalates are used as plasticizers and fragrance fixatives. In cosmetics, the most common is diethyl phthalate (DEP), which serves as a fragrance solvent. Under U.S. FDA (Food and Drug Administration) rules, companies are not required to disclose the specific chemicals hidden inside the word "fragrance" or "parfum" on labels, treating them as trade secrets. The Environmental Working Group (EWG), which cross-references cosmetic ingredient lists against toxicology databases, assigns a blanket hazard score of 8 for "fragrance" on any label precisely because of this opacity. Fragrances and colognes consistently rank as the most hazardous product category in EWG's Skin Deep database, largely because of their phthalate content.

Parabens are preservatives used in cosmetics, shampoos, and lotions. Unlike phthalates, they must be individually listed on ingredient labels, making them easier to spot and avoid. Scientists have found paraben compounds in breast tissue; they are weakly estrogenic, meaning they mimic estrogen in the body.

The critical point, especially for teenagers, is timing. Toxicologists recognize adolescence as a "sensitive period" for EDC exposure. Hormonal systems in flux, ongoing brain development, and maturing reproductive systems make teenagers measurably more vulnerable to disruption from the same dose of an EDC that would have minimal impact on an adult. Disruption during this window may produce long-lasting effects not reversed when the exposure ends.

How Quickly Can the Body Clear These Chemicals?

The question of whether lowering product count actually reduces chemical exposure has a direct answer: yes, rapidly and measurably. A landmark 2016 study by Kim Harley and colleagues at UC Berkeley, called the Health and Environmental Research on Makeup of Salinas Adolescents (HERMOSA) study, enrolled 100 Latina teen girls in a three-day intervention. Participants switched to personal care products labeled free of phthalates, parabens, triclosan, and oxybenzone.

The results, measured in urine samples before and after, were striking. Urinary concentrations of monoethyl phthalate (MEP), the breakdown product of diethyl phthalate (the fragrance phthalate), fell by 27.4%. Methyl and propyl paraben concentrations dropped by 44% and 45% respectively. Both triclosan and benzophenone-3 (BP-3), a sunscreen UV filter, each fell by 36% after switching. Three days. That is how quickly the body clears short-half-life EDCs when the input from personal care products is removed.

How to Reduce Teen Exposure to Fragrance Chemicals

  • Read ingredient labels carefully: Look for products that explicitly list fragrance components rather than hiding them under the generic term "fragrance" or "parfum." Parabens must be individually named, so you can identify and avoid them by checking the full ingredient list.
  • Choose fragrance-free or naturally scented alternatives: Select personal care products labeled "fragrance-free" or scented with essential oils rather than synthetic fragrance compounds. Be aware that "unscented" may still contain masking fragrances, so "fragrance-free" is the clearer choice.
  • Limit product layering: Reduce the total number of scented products used daily. Since the Rutgers study found that product count directly correlates with chemical exposure, using fewer products, even if they are not perfectly clean, reduces overall body burden of endocrine disruptors.
  • Be cautious of influencer-driven purchases: Teens and parents should be aware that beauty influencers with their own product lines have a financial incentive to promote maximum product adoption, not minimum exposure. Evaluate purchases based on ingredient safety rather than influencer endorsement.
  • Check EWG Skin Deep database: Use the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database to cross-reference personal care products against toxicology data before purchase. Products with lower hazard scores are less likely to contain high levels of phthalates and parabens.

Why Is the Influencer Effect So Powerful?

The Rutgers study has an unusual origin that explains why the social media angle was even captured. The research began in 2023 as a collaboration between the Rutgers Center for Environmental Exposures and Disease and Princeton High School's research program. Two then-high school students, Gabrielle Kaputa and Vita Moss-Wang, joined the team and played a pivotal role: they helped design the survey instrument, prepared ethics materials, and created recruitment videos. Critically, they pushed the research team to include questions about social media use.

It was a suggestion that proved to be the study's most significant methodological contribution. Prior research had established which products teenagers use; no peer-reviewed study had directly measured whether social media engagement predicts how many products they use. Kaputa and Moss-Wang saw what trained epidemiologists had not: that the real driver of teen product adoption was not who teens were or what they earned, but what appeared in their feeds.

The Rutgers finding makes the HERMOSA study's rapid-clearance numbers both more urgent and harder to act on. When influencer engagement is actively increasing product counts by 30 to 40%, any parent or teen making deliberate product-reduction choices is working against a commercial pipeline whose financial incentive is precisely the opposite. Influencers who operate their own product lines are not neutral product reviewers; they are manufacturers with an economic stake in maximum adoption of their product portfolios.

For teens and parents navigating the beauty and personal care landscape, the takeaway is clear: the chemicals in fragrance and scented products pose real risks during adolescence, and social media is actively driving increased exposure. Understanding this mechanism is the first step toward making more intentional choices about which products enter the home and onto developing bodies.
